Pentagon Report Says There Were Instances of Koran Mishandling at Guantanamo

A Pentagon report released Friday evening (June 3rd) found that there were in fact incidents of Korans being mishandled by U.S. guards at Guantanamo Bay prison, although none involved the Islamic holy book being flushed down the toilet, as alleged two weeks ago in a since-retracted Newsweek report.

The Pentagon confirmed incidents in which, according to AP:

*A U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a prisoner's Koran.
*Prison guards threw water balloons in a cell block, causing a number of Korans to
get wet.
*A guard's urine splashed on a detainee and his Koran when the guard urinated
near an air vent and the wind blew his urine through the vent.
*An interrogator stepped on a Koran during an interrogation.
*An obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of a Koran.

Still, Pentagon officials said the problems were relatively minor and U.S. commanders have gone to great lengths to allow detainees to practice their religion. The White House also sought to downplay the report, with spokesman Scott McClellan saying, "It is unfortunate that some have chosen to take out of context a few isolated incidents by a few individuals." White House officials also noted that the investigation found 15 cases of detainees mishandling their own Korans, which they pointed out was three times as many incidents as those by guards.

5 incidents of Korans being mishandled by U.S. guards at Guantanamo. 15 cases of detainees mishandling their own Korans. Guess which one gets all the news coverage?
Did you know our government provided the detainees with these Korans? The solution to this problem is real simple no more Korans for prisoners. These are not US Citizens they are not afforded the same rights we enjoy.

Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Sunday (June 5th) that the United States needs to move toward shutting down the military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Speaking on ABC's This Week, Biden said of Guantanamo, "This has become the greatest propaganda tool that exists for recruiting of terrorists around the world. And it is unnecessary to be in that position." He proposed that an independent commission investigate Guantanamo and make recommendations, but still said that he thinks the end result should be shutting it down. He said, "Those that we have reason to keep, keep. And those we don't, let go," adding, "I think more Americans are in jeopardy as a consequence of the perception that exists worldwide with its existence than if there were no Gitmo."

Great idea Joe! Let's just cave. Where are we going to put the bad guys?

Religion of peace, my arse! Burn that rag!

Those Korans were issued by the US Government and are therefore government property, and I think we should take them away. They just use it to jusitify their violence. They have no respect for their own sacred scripture.

When's the last time a Christian held a plane full of passengers hostage? When's the last time a Christian gunned down Olympic athletes? When's the last time a Christian flew a plane into a building full of people? When's the last time a Christian kidnapped or beheaded someone IN THE NAME OF THEIR RELIGION!?!?!

The Libs took the Bible out of our schools and Christ out of Christmas, yet protect and promote the Koran and Islam. They protect the terrorists and John Cooey, but want the innocent like Terri Schiavo to starve like a dog.

It only takes a little common sense to see the difference between right and wrong. And yes, there are absolutes. The dispelling of absolutes is just one of the things that contributes to the immorality, and the imminent demise of our country.

In the Americas Christians committed acts of Genocide.
Yes it was in their religion.
Practically every murder in US is committed by a christian.

When did a Budhist ever commit harmfull acts?

What the hell is wrong with respect anyway. If we promote tolerence why can't we be tolerent?
Lets make an example of the yahoo gaurds who are trying to make a joke.
Although, if the acts were committed by the people at Gauntanamo themselves then we should blame them.

I am wondering how many people at Guantanamo are innocent. There were 2 Canadians that the US knew for sure were terrorists and yet both were innocent.
Everyone deserves the right to a fair trial.
How would you like going to Gauntanamo because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time?
