Students reject honor to 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' hero

Lt. Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington during World War II

Member of Marines not 'sort of person UW wanted to produce'

The University of Washington's student senate rejected a memorial for alumnus Gregory "Pappy" Boyington of "Black Sheep Squadron" fame amid concerns a military hero who shot down enemy planes was not the right kind of person to represent the school.

Student senator Jill Edwards, according to minutes of the student government's meeting last week, said she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."

As a former Marine I just can't believe what I read. Our members of the armed serivice's including most likely, the fathers and grandfathers of those wet behind the ears know it all's have fought and died to give them the right to reject a memorial to this Marine. You would think that they would at least have enough respet for our service men and woeman to Honor him, regardless of thier opinion, for what he did for us. After all we did not start WWII. Maybe they have rewritten history again and Japan did'nt attack us, Hitler was'nt taking over Europe. It is a sad day in America when we can't put our opinions aside about the wars and at least Honor the men and woeman in our services that have done the job they were sent to do. A job I might add that no one really wants to do. Thank God that we still have the young people in this country with the courage to fight for us when called, even if it is to give the students at the U of W the right to reject them. Maybe some day they will understand what Freedom isn't Free means. To all the men and woeman that have or will serve, fight, and god forbid die for our country. Thank you and Semper Fi.
