4 sentenced for killing Volusia homeless man

Ode to Michael Roberts

The four teens who admitted beating and stomping a homeless man to death last year were sentenced to between 22 and 35 years in jail today.

Volusia Circuit Judge Joseph G. Will struck a compromise between prosecutor's demands that the teens get life in prison and defense attorneys' requests that they be treated as juveniles. The sentences are:

-- Jeffery Spurgeon, 19, 35 years;

-- Christopher Scamahorn, 15, 35 years;

-- Justin Stearns, 18, 27 years;

-- Warren Messner, 16, 22 years.

All four had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Investigators say the four beat Michael Roberts, 53, with sticks, fists and logs in three separate attacks.
Was justice served?

Where were these "kids" parents? Why weren't they raised properly to have respect for life? I'm distgusted by the behavior of these young men, but I am even more distgusted that their pernts didn't teach them any better!

Murder, and extremely brutal murder, deserves a sentence far greater than these punks got.
