Oklahoma Unemployment Is Way Down. Will Media Look into Why?

Oklahoma's unemployment rate, which was a seasonally adjusted 4.3% and 4.4%, respectively, in September and October 2007 (4.1% and 4.2% unadjusted), has fallen to a seasonally adjusted 3.1% in both February and March of this year (3.5% and 3.2% unadjusted).

The unemployment rate in most states has gone up from September 2007 to March 2008. In states where the rate has gone down, none has shown an improvement like that seen in the Sooner State -- not even close.

Why is that?

What has happened in Oklahoma that hasn't happened elsewhere?

Well, one thing Oklahoma did last year was to pass an enforcement-focused immigration reform law.

It did so in May, and it took effect in November. Here is how One News Now described the bill at the time it was signed by the state's governor (original link no longer available):

House Bill 1804 was passed by overwhelming majorities in both the House and Senate of the Oklahoma Legislature. The measure’s sponsor, State Representative Randy Terrill, says the bill has four main topical areas: it deals with identity theft; it terminates public assistance benefits to illegals; it empowers state and local police to enforce federal immigration laws; and it punishes employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens.

Oklahoma is no longer “O.K.” for illegal aliens, Terrill observes. “When you put everything together in context,” he contends, “the bottom line is illegal aliens will not come here if there are no jobs waiting for them, they will not stay here if there is no government subsidy, and they certainly won’t stay here if they know that if they ever encounter our state and local law enforcement officers, they will be physically detained until they’re deported. And that’s exactly what House Bill 1804 does.”

The Oklahoma legislator is pleased the bill he sponsored into law was signed by Governor Henry and believes it will go a long way to curb the illegal immigration problem in the state.

It seems reasonable to ask if the law has accomplished the intended curbing of illegal immigration. This January 9 USA Today article by Emily Bazar ("Strict immigration law rattles Okla. businesses") indicates that it has -- not that Bazar thinks that this is a good thing.

The next question to ask would be whether citizens have taken jobs that illegals used to do. Though the lower unemployment rate doesn't in and of itself prove that, it does point strongly in that direction.

The sparse coverage of the improving employment situation in the state has received sparse coverage, and the only two relevant stories I found (here and here) did not attempt to explain why it's happening.

Will anyone in Old Media dig more deeply into the Sooner State's situation? Or will they try to pretend that Oklahoma's improvement doesn't exist, because finding out why might expose some inconvenient truths, and hurt the cause of illegal-immigrant "amnesty"?

Maybe Heraldo Rivera will do a special some Saturday night on Fox News channel. Right... The illegals probably packed up the El Caminos, and headed off to LA, or Chicago, assuming identities, birth certificates, social security numbers of someone's US born grandkids, not to be discovered for the next 20 years.

Not to fear though!! Juan McCain is to the rescue in 2009.. Sie Peudo! and will straightin' you bigots out. If not Juan... one of the other "3 stooges" will.

OK must have not had a large hispanic population in the first place. If they did this bill would have never passed.

congress represents "who"???

the largest group that will keep them in power.

God I hope that more city, county, and state governments will follow this example. This is about the only way there will ever be a resolution to this invasion.

There will be NO bill like this ever passed on the federal level, and any enforcement of existing federal laws may get the law enforcement officer thrown in lock-up.

Did an evil dictator overthrow the state government and impose their facist rule over the poor masses?!?!?

Wouldn't it just be grand if Florida
would pass legislation in the same vein ??

I don't see it happening.

I know..folks would call me names, like 'cracker' etc..but I recall a wonderful, happy, uncongested state as a child that really was a vacation
paradise- before Disney.

As it is, Florida is on the road to complete ruin..and all my calls and letters to Crist and my reps are wasted. They have an agenda, to make Florida into a Mexifornia clone.

Just think, the IRS economic stimulous payments are on there way. Using the IRS calculator at http://www.irs.gov/app/espc/ Someone married with 5 kids, even if they paid no Federal income taxes, will get a payment of $2,700 from the IRS. Or if you have 10 kids, married, and paid no taxes, you would get a payment of $4,200 from the IRS! Now if that isn't progress towards income redistribution, I don't know what is. Almost enough money to pay for a ceasarean birth of an 11th kid. Sie Peudo!!! Yes we ken!!!

Wait until the Senate passes the Global Poverty Act (S.2433) sponsored by Obama. It already passed the house, and is scheduled for a vote in the Senate. That will force U.S. taxpayers to fork over as much as 0.7 percent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product -- or $845,000,000,000.00 -- on welfare to third-world countries.

Bend over America! We are coming for you. As Hillary and Obama sing along, Sie Puedo! Ya'll smiling fools!

Texas news. (Victoria, Texas is a town about 80 miles west of Houston).

Local Hispanic leaders, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses in the Victoria area this weekend as demonstration of their economic impact on the community.

The boycott was declared a success in the Hispanic community, noting that revenue in Caucasian owned businesses was down 19%.

Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%!

My life and day is ruined... Can't even listen to Bud H. anymore here. Luckily, I taped some old Doctor Laura rerun's that I listen to now and than, to remind me of AM 540 in the distant past... The whole country has gone to crap. First we have whistlin' Juan McCain as the Rep candidate. The other two ass clowns will destroy the country. So "change" is out, it'll be business as usual the next 4 years, unless.. god help us.. Juan moves on to a higher position behind the pearly gates. About the only good thing going on in Orlando, Fl is the light rail commuter train is going down the tubes. Just as you and we said, nobody's going to ride the thing. Just say your prayer's Governor Chuckie Crist isn't Juan's VP candidate. He's destroying this State, and if he's in DC we are in BIG trouble. He is bought and paid for by the trial lawyers, in my personal opinion.

Speaken of writen letters to reps. After supporting Tom Feeney from day 1, I wrote him a letter to the Reserach Park office a year ago, with a concern as a constituent. No answer whatsover. I'd vote for his competitor this fall primary Todd Long, but I reregistered from Republican to Non-Party, primary because of Juan McCain, and Feeney's no response sealed the deal. So what's that old saying? KMA Tom Feeney. Go back to growing fern's. (some of you should know what I mean)

Bud won't discuss to my issues, he is too... pc.. So I stopped listening to him. Oklahoma, enjoy your new PC for the next 3 - 4 years, he will listen and address your local concerns. We miss him here in Florida.

I ain't movin to Tulsa though!

But, the US Government is still screwing the OK taxpayers, to educate the offspring of the remaining illegal immigrants. I can't believe the Supreme court ruled in 1982, that "illegal" immigrant children are required to receive a free education, from Elementary school to U-12. ILLEGAL... immigrants... Does the Supreme Court understand the word ILLEGAL?? ILLEGAL = RACISM...? Now in NC they are screaming RACISM, because the Community colleges are going to start refusing to allow illegal immigrants to attend college at the State resident tuition rate; even though the State college's don't have that rule in NC. Hello!!! Hello!!!! Illegal??? Anybody remember what illegal used to mean? KMA when I cheat on my taxes. Who was President in 1982? The problem started on his or her watch, as far as I'm concerned. No, I suppose the primary blame was the idiots we elected in Congress, who do all they can to sabatoge whomever is President, the American people elected in the first place for change. Republican, Democrat, same thing, business as usual..
