Senator: Jessica Lunsford Act Could Have Unintended Consequences

In response to the 9-year-old girl's death, Florida legislators stepped in and passed the Jessica Lunsford Act. Gov. Jeb Bush promptly signed the bill, and it will become law effective Sept. 1.

The law is intended to place tougher restrictions on convicted sexual predators, but some say the unintended consequences will affect almost everyone working at or visiting a school.

"When you're in the heat of the battle, and after the awful things that happened to Jessica and what took place, sometimes we go too far to try and correct it," state Sen. Stephen Wise said.

Do you think the Jessica Lunsford Act goes 'overboard?' does it make our children any safer? I'm talking about it Monday.

Of course it puts children at greater risks. Many pedophiles are caught because their victims come forward. But dead children tell no tells.

These laws encourag pedophiles to kill children. A truly awful direction for the States to take us.

We have over-reacted. There is talk in the Orange County school system that the law is going to mean any adult coming onto a school campus will have to pass the same background check/finger printing regimine that staff and teachers currently must pass. That's great - except for the fact that the process takes weeks. So forget about going to your child's school and helping out spur of the moment or filing in as a parent chaperone on your child's field trip for another parent who gets sick at the last minute.

I am a publishers rep and visit all the county schools in Florida. I figure the cost to me will be about $12,000.00, not counting the time lost and the travel expense in all the counties. Then I can visit the schools and hope to sell someone.
