Jan Hall Vindicated!

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting...

Report: Teacher showed no bias
Jan P. Hall resigned in August after a flap over a letter she wrote demeaning Hispanics and immigrants.

The former Orange County teacher who wrote a controversial letter complaining about Hispanics and immigrants showed no bias when it came to grading her students' work or disciplining them, according to an investigative report the school district released Friday.
Now where does Jan Hall go to get back her good reputation?

Mr. Waytotheright.
Someone's inability to speak english does NOT make them idiots. This is a very racist statement to make of people. How many languages do you speak, sir? I have posted previously that text books I used in Puerto Rico in the 7th grade were the exact ones I used AGAIN in school in 9th grade in the Florida public school system. People that want to learn, learn, people that don't want to learn, don't. this is true no matter what race, color, creed or national origin you come from.
Your remarks make no one any good. It may be best to keep your biased thoughts to yourself.

People who live in the USA and won't learn to speak English are either lazy or ignorant, or both. This doesn't make them idiots. We are the idiots for catering to them to the point where they don't have to learn English, and by our actions, making them feel that we are the ones who should learn their language.

there are two sides of the coin. Unwillingness to learn, and inability to learn. Do you think that at your age you can learn another language? Some people that move to the mainland are at an age that they don't have the time or money to learn another language. It does not make them lazy nor ignorant. I too belive that you should make an attempt at learning the local language. Us americans always say "learn the language or get the hell out", but then when we visit other countries, we expect (almost DEMAND) that other countries know english as well!! Remember that the US is made up of many different races and religions. Our official language was almost german (by one vote). Our diversity is what makes us the greatest nation on earth. Another thing. Just because someone is speaking in a different language in front of you, does not mean that they are speaking about you!!

Why is the local media protecting Gary Siplin's office on this leak?

To Anon: If I were to move to another country and make it my permanent home, I would certainly learn the language, no matter how old I was. But then I am a responsible, independent person, and I would have enough respect for my new home to become a legal citizen and adopt the customs and language of my new home. It doesn't cost anything to learn English, so money is not the issue. The more Hispanics are catered to in the form of bilingual signs, voice mails, etc., the more they expect. Just look at the recent case in Dallas where principals are being forced to learn Spanish or lose their jobs. Your arguments don't hold water. If these people wanted to learn English, they could. I am told many public libraries have FREE English classes. I was simply agreeing with you that someone's refusal to learn the language of the country they live in doesn't make them idiots.

Mr. Way to the right:
You are showing your true colors yet again. I know of many college educated people that moved to the US in their 60's or 70's that have not learned the language due to lack of time really the necessity to do so (if they are always at home and someone can translate for them, then it is much more difficult to force yourself to do this). Again, does not make anyone an idiot for this. I do not see you saying that Asians need to learn english, you are very biased against Hispanics.
Have you ever been to a latin-american country? Not everyone lives in a "rat hole" as you cleverly describe.
FYI, I was born in a latin-american country, my father is american and my mother puerto rican. I have been blessed to speak both languages all my life (fluenty and w/o accents on either one). I remember my father telling me that he was learning to speak french as a kid so he could communicate with his grandmother, who did not speak english. Now, you speak of "our culture".. now, what is our culture? Is it Cherokee, Sioux, Seminole that we should all learn to speak?m oh sorry, colonist times, then English, French, Spanish (are you a native Floridian??, who was here BEFORE the US took over control... oh, almost forgot, the SPANISH), how about LA, French??? do you get the point? The USA is not about any ONE culture, race or language (yes, English is the official language and I do think that everyone should attempt to learn it, but again, not everyone can learn at different ages, that is why there are bankers, bakers, janitors, lawyers, doctors, etc... we are not in a communist/socialist country!!). You are stepping in it and bringing down the very thing that makes our country great (I will say OUR country, as I am a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN), diversity. Intolerance to other peoples cultures (especially in the US) is the most hypocritical thing I have ever heard. Protect the US and its borders, YES, protect the US from ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, YES, continue to make this country the best in the world, YES. Intolerance to other cultures/races, NO. This makes us as bad as some other countries.
Just for clarification, I am a registered republican and have voted republican since I have been able to vote (over 20 years now), and will to continue to do so. Plus calling people of other countries lazy just from your perceptions makes you look ignorant. I personally worked in MEXICO for over two years with an american company, and I would trade any of those workers for any worker in the same capacity of work in the US in a SECOND. These guys did not stop for anything, and they worked for a wage of approximately $6.00 a DAY. This sentiment has been echoed by many co-workers of mine that worked in the same company in different parts of the us, and the mexican workers he had in CA and TX he would trade for any workers he had in many other states.
Where you are from does not equate to the level of work you will put out. That generalization is simply asinine.
If you are going to spew racist and generalist comments, at least go out there and gain some REAL insight into what you are talking about, not just what you perceive from your front porch.

Mr, waytotheright:
You are again speaking that of which you know nothing about. Where else have you lived? The US is a great place, but to each his own. I have a friend that had for years wanted to live in NZ, and now he does. It took him YEARS in order to get his paperwork together in order to enter the country LEGALLY. He was tired of the hustle and bustle of Orlando, and wanted a change. So no "this is the best of this, this is the best of that" BS from you, as you truly don't know (what other countries have you lived in to make this assumption. There are differences in places, social structures, economic structures, topography that play into it. Not everyone in South America that comes to the US does so because their country is a POS. They may have been transferred and wanted different (you see I did not say better) opportunities. I grew up speaking both languages, and moved to the mainland because I came with my parents. Would I have been worse off if I had not moved, I don't know, there is no way of telling. WOuld I have been better off?? I don't know, there is no way of telling.
Sick Boy: I have not been to Cartagena, or some other SA countries, you are correct, but I do have friends/family from several south american countries (chile, Venezuela, Gyana, Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Peru), and again, it is all in where you are within those countries. I would much rather live in a small city in Argentina or Peru than in LA! Same as in the US.. would you rather live in Detroit, or in Honolulu?
To Wild Cur:
I can see your point and frustration, but if someone comes to the clinic that is here LEGALLY, and may not speak the language, does this make them ineligible for care? I am not saying that you have to have a tranlsator in every shift, but think about if you are in a foreign country and you hurt yourself and your wife or husband take you to a hospital in a remote area and no one speaks english, is that their fault or yours? It is no one's fault. You have to work around it. I don't believe one should DEMAND one to speak another language, but you should do things to help them out (as you should do to anyone). REmember, not all hispanics are ILLEGALS!! Puerto Ricans, for example are just as much Americans as ANYONE. 100% natural born (not naturalized) citizens. Do they not deserve the same treatment and service as any other american? otherwise it is discriminatory!!

Mr. way, sick, and wild:
I believe that you are misinterpreting me. I do agree that coming to the US one should learn english. But there is no "cross the border and you now understand english" line. I truly agree that the US is one of the greatest countries, but as I said, not all coutries are crap, or rat holes. People do come here as the opportunities are sometimes far better than in other countries (not always, but sometimes). I believe that illegal immigration should be curbed and taken care of. I do not agree in "open borders" we are taxed enough as it is w/o having to pick up the tab for others that are surely not putting their share of tax $$ into the economy. They do spend sales tax money, but no other taxing (payroll, ss, etc..) I wish I did not have to spend that money either!!
As for "press #2 for spanish" comments, private companies are NOT required to do this... there is STRICTLY AN ECONOMIC REASON FOR DOING THIS. Believe it or not, not all hispanics are illegals working for below minimum-wage under the table. The hispanic community spends as much as any community, and making places that are more attractive to them to shop (language, products, etc..) helps more companies bring in additional revenue (look at Publix's "sabor" concept). As for government offices, some do it, some don't. Would you prefer that they don't do it at all and the people that need assistance or have to pay their property taxes, ect, don't do it because they don't understand the language at thhat time? Yes, it is a crutch, and it perpetuates the problem, but unfortunately, with something like this it is not "sink or swim", you can't just rip off the band-aid.
As for Mr. Way's comments from cubans, there has always been some animosity between Cubans and Puerto Ricans, so the comments made by your cuban friends can be marked as somewhat biased. As for your comment about peopler from PR commenting on people from pr; there are crap people anywhere and everywhere... Unfortunately, the crap people are the loudest and ones that don't "blend in". Question... if you moved from Orlando to say... New York, would you consider yourself to be moving to New York, or migrating to New York? I ask, as you continue to classify people from PR as migrating to the US. People from Cuba migrate to the us, people from pr move to the us.
What I mean by learning the language is that it takes TIME (not that one does not have time), especially the older you get. By that I mean that a young person (before the teenage years) will take much less time to learn a different language than an older person. As for teenagers not wanting to learn, or appearing that they don't want to learn, I think that that lies with the parents, and I don't mean just hispanic parents, but the way that teenagers behave these days. While I do not consider myself old (40 years old). If I would have behaved the way I see MOST teenagers (not just hispanics) act nowadays, I would have been beaten to within an inch of my life. I sincerely hope as they grow up they begin to understand respect and good work ethic, or our country is in trouble!

MR. way, I don't understand your comment about the ak??? I'm also not a huge fan of brussel sprouts. Also, what is "act like an american" mean? do people in Florida act the same way they do in Montana??, Jersey, Utah??
Do you think that immigrants from Italy should have been treated differently from immigrants from Ireland because they did not speak english??? I would like to know your opinion on this.

Both of you,
Bottom line is that puertoricans will keep on dragging people here, and you will have serve them if you work at a place they go to. Deal with it, or move to China!
