Andy Rooney: The Word 'Negro' is a Perfectly Good Word

Fan of the word 'Negro'

When's the last time Don Imus or Andy Rooney made headlines? It appears today will be the day. The old curmudgeon Rooney apparently hasn't quite made an appearance into the 21st Century. Most of us haven't noticed as I doubt many still pay attention to the old man that sits underneath those eyebrows.

Making an appearance on Imus In The Morning on MSNBC Rooney said the following...

'I have a problem with the term African American...Rooney says.

"The word Negro is a perfectly good word. There is nothing wrong with that"

What year is this clown living in? Will Rooney take heat for this? Will it be Andy "The Greek" Rooney treatment?

"Speaking as a member of a minority group in this country (a homosexual/f----t/queer/gay/fairy/fruit/tinkerbell, etc.), I find this word rather acceptable. I'm not a big person for PC talk, as I think it's hyperusage has led us into the current state of affairs. That said, I obviously wouldn't want many of the words I wrote above to be used regarding me, especially by those who would rather see me strung up on a barbed-wire fence and left to die. I think 'Negro' is fine. It's much better than the other 'N' word."

"The derivation of the word comes from the Latin "niger," meaning black. In Spanish the word "negra" means black. The word 'Negro' was the term used to describe people of African descent prior to 1960 in the U.S. Some of the best baseball players to play the game played in the Negro Leagues, which was the common term at the time. Terminology has changed over time. The term 'Negro' lost favor and was replaced by 'black' and then 'African-American.' The last two are the most frequently used today. I certainly don't think Andy Rooney should be criticized for using the term 'Negro,' although it makes him seem old and dated, which of course, he is."

A left winger like Rooney can say anything he wants and the rest of the media is fine with it. Remember, it is only bad to label things as they are if you are conservative, it is only bad to be proud of your skin color if you are a conservative. Don't even bother trying to use logic or explain this, it does not matter. All that matters is that he is a lib.

I don't understand what he means. Does he mean 'good' in that he feels free to use it whenever talking or writing about blacks? 'Boy' is a good word, too, but I'd never use it when refering to a black man.

I ahve to agree. AFerican American is a PC term. Even the NI word i find disputable in it's ban on usage considering how many blacks i hear using the word but woe to the white person who uses the word at all. I am not for ethnic(i think the word race being used to refer to skin color or ethnicity is incorrect as well. We are all part of the human RACE.) slurs at all. HOwever i htink a huge double standard exists in terms of what a white person is allowed to say about black persons versus what black folks are able to refer to us and each other by.

Just to be fair, he is also a fan of the terms "Honky", "Whitey", and "Cracker".

My neighbor is a tall dorky white guy born and raised in South Africa. I guess that technically makes him an African-American.

Can you dig it, my brother?
