Everything is backwards!

In 1988, the voters of Florida amended the State Constitution to make English the language of official business for the State of Florida. The legislature has chosen to igore the wishes of the voters and, instead, proposes that we make the speaking of Spanish a requirement for all Florida elementary students.

SB 522 - Elementary Schools/Spanish Language

Strength in numbers...we need to contact our legislators and tell them in no uncertain terms that their jobs representing (?) us will be in dire jeopardy should this bill pass.

This is totally upside down. Those who come to OUR country need to learn OUR language. To mandate that our children learn their language is ridiculous.

We are in the process of losing almost everything that has, in the past, made the United States the best country in the world.

This subject makes my blood boil.

Hi Pat,

The Spanish-speaking people who have decided to live in the ENGLISH-speaking United States of America should be MANDATED to learn how to speak ENGLISH.

American-born, English-speaking students should have the OPTION of taking a SECOND language course if that will be THEIR choice.

Ms. Sandy

I think what the legislators are trying to do here is ease the burden on public schools by giving parents enough reasons to home school their children or enroll them in private schools. They don't want your children going to public school because then they can use the money saved to give themselves another raise.

I and my wife alone will decide what's best for our child. I'm not willing to leave that decision making to ANYONE else, especially some fool legislator who is probably better suited to be selling used cars.

Amen Anonymous. I agree that it should be my choice, not MANDATED by the legislator. Stop trying to coddle to the Spanish. If they want to live here, let them learn the language. Stop having bilinqual interpreters for everyone (for the kids maybe until they can learn English) and start MAKING them learn the language. Come on, where is the respect for the country that you are "visiting" in because for the most part, the ones who can't speak English are the ones not American born.

Vodoochile,

I don't know what your arguing about. I don't have any beef with you. I agree that foreign language programs are beneficial to a child's education on many levels.

The real issue here is government putting it's nose somewhere else that it doesn't belong. If I feel it best for my child to take a Latin class, I'll have her sign up for Latin. Government shouldn't force it upon her.

Before you go calling me close minded, why don't you make sure you understand my point of view!

Also, even if I did send my child to private school, my tax dollars still go to public schools giving me the right and the responsibility to have a say in what goes on. So that wouldn't change my point of view on the matter.

Hey Vodoochile: I think you need to realize #1 that you have no children so you don't realize or have any comprehension how badly the school systems are here in the first place. They don't need to ADD something else as a requirement when they can't even teach the current required well enough. DO NOT GET ME WRONG: it is not the teachers fault! I blame that fact that we have HUNDREDS, IF NOT THOUSANDS of students that cannot speak ENGLISH, so the teachers are mandated to teach at a lower level to ACCOMMODATE these students. Again, instead of requiring Spanish, require first that all the kids can speak English and cannot advance grades until they do it.

I have NO PROBLEM with my children learning Spanish. I'd like to FIRST see the education system of Florida accomplish teaching fluently Math, Reading, etc and make this state higher on the education chain than it currently is (very, very low out of the 50 states) and then they can mandate OPTIONAL classes like Spanish.

Again, to recap, how can our state mandate Spanish when they CAN'T EVEN TEACH THE BASICS ALREADY due to the many Spanish non-English speaking kids.

Don't accuse me of being close minded when you really have no clue. Spanish is a great language to learn for a career in the future. But they need to learn the basics first and foremost!

Vodoochile,

I think your Utopian ideals are clouding the issue just a bit.

Of course there has to be some set of standards to measure the progress of education in the public schools. However, comparing basic math, science, and language skills to learning a second language is just a little naive. You cannot function in this world without basic skills. While very useful and advantageous, a second language is not a basic skill.

The public school system is currently "graduating" students who cannot grasp one language, let alone a second. With this in mind, to make a second language part of the required curriculum seems a little out of focus. These foreign language programs should remain as an ELECTIVE CHOICE for our children, not an mandatory part of their education.

The person who said Latin should be the choice of a "foreign" language is right on target. NO, we don't speak it, but it allows children to broaden their use of our language because it is the base of so many words...Latin and Greek.

Eventually extra-terrestrial beings will invade the Earth and make us learn their language, so what's the point.
