Banks offer no-interest options for Muslims

The following article appeared on the front page of the Business section in The Detroit News on Tuesday, December 21.

Banks offer no-interest options for Muslims
Traditional home loans go against beliefs in the Koran for devout followers.

Sumaya Boomgaard's situation is familiar to area Muslims who want to balance their faith with the practices of the U.S. banking system. Boomgaard makes dinner in her new home.

Sumaya Boomgaard, a 35-year-old physical therapist, had rented apartments for a decade when she decided it was time to put down some roots.

But she struggled with the idea of a traditional mortgage. Like many devout Muslims, Boomgaard wants to conduct her financial life in accordance with the Koran, the sacred book of the Muslims that forbids paying or receiving interest, or "riba" in Arabic.

"Everyone strives to comply with the rules given to us as Muslims," Boomgaard said.

That is why Boomgaard worked hard to buy her "cozy starter home" in Auburn Hills through a unique interest-free program offered by Ann Arbor's University Bank, among the first of its kind in Metro Detroit.

Boomgaard's situation is familiar to area Muslims who want to balance their faith with the practices of the U.S. banking system. In response, a small number of local lenders and national financial institutions are finding ways for this niche market to buy homes, save money and invest while still honoring their beliefs.

Michigan has one of the largest Muslim populations in the nation, with more than 400,000 Arab Americans. Still, the number of programs available to communities that prohibit interest is limited.

National lenders offer some programs. Freddie Mac has offered home-financing contracts in accordance with Muslim law since 2001 through American Finance House -- LARIBA in Pasadena, Calif. However, the program has received little publicity.

Sign me up for that deal! Sweet! Where can I get my interest free home loan? Are these loans taxpayer backed?

Sick Boy certainly describes you very well. Your understanding of Islam qualifies you as one twisted rail. Your misunderstanding of Islam is second only to the criminals who carry out acts of terrorism. Unfortunately most other religions including Christianity are open to criminal interpretaions. The blood stain on Christianity is much larger than Islams, Buddhisms, Hinduisms, or Judaisms, all tolled. I have yet to read any hate filled posts from Muslims or followers of other faiths on this site. All the hate spewed here has come from so-called Christians like your self. So much for the religion of peace and love. Jesus knows you not!

"Why is it necessary for you neo-cons to always be picking on the Muslims."

Your question contains the assumption that all of us non-liberals are neo-cons, and that neo-cons are all bad. That's similar to the old question, "Do you still beat your wife?"

There's no such thing as a free lunch. If muslims are getting special breaks on mortgages or anything else, then somebody somewhere is paying the freight, and that somebody is most likely a non-muslim.

Picking on muslims? Of all the wars going on in the world today, most of them are involve muslims trying to impose their will upon others through the barrel of a gun.

Here's a snippet from http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/wars/articles/20050923.aspx : "... Islamic terrorists are part of many of the ethnic and religious conflicts that form the basis for so many existing wars." This page is only one page, it lists all of the wars going on today, and it's a good read. I suggest that all PC bloggers check it out.

The Crusades, The Inquisition, The Reformation, The Counter-Reformation, The European wars throughout the middle ages, Colonialism of the 19th century, WWI, WWII. All of these events were Christian soldier fighting Christian soldier or Christian soldier fighting another group as in colonailism. German Christians fought all other Christians in WWII with the blessings of the Pope. All of these wars were either culture wars or religious wars. Even Stalin became religious and became the father of the Russian Orthodox Church in order to enthuse his masses against Hitler. On the other hand Hitler thought of himself as the bastion of western civilization against communism and the Jews. If these soldiers are not Christians who are they. These are so-called Christian nations, of which the US is included. Christian on Christian violence. Oceans of blood. Don't say they are not Christians because they do not believe exactly as you do, remember there are 10,000 sects of Christianity with more new ones every day.

I don't understand the problem here. Banks are private institutions. They are in business to make money through service to customers. If a bank wants to lure Muslim customers with a Sharia mortgage then what is the problem. The bank I use caters to hispanics. All the signs inside are Spanish and all the employees speak Spanish. I don't have a problem, they are polite to me and speak English. If I was not satisfied with the service I would go to another bank. A Sharia mortgage is not involved with a direct form of interest, the bank purchases the property and the customer lease purchases it from the bank over a period of time. Nothing is free, but it satisfies the observant Muslim in that he is not directly involved in interest. Way to the Right.....what makes you want to go out and kill people?

.You're correct Anonymous. I can't understand how a Christian can read such a violent book such as the Bible. I was reading earlier, and found this:
"
Crowd: Israel is the enemy of Allah.

Man: May the hands of the infidels be chopped off.

Crowd: May the hands of the infidels be chopped off.

Man: May the hands of the infidels be chopped off.

Crowd: May the hands of the infidels be chopped off.

Man: (Chopped off) from the land of the believers.

Crowd: From the land of the believers.

Man: The Audience will now split into two groups: One group will settle the score with America, and the other will settle the score with Israel. This group
now: Death to America!

Crowd: Death to America!

Man: Death to Israel!

Crowd: Death to Israel! Death to America!

Man: Death to America!

Crowd: Death to America!

Man: Death to America!

Crowd: Death to Israel! Death to America! Death to Israel!

Man: All together now: Death to America! Death to Israel!

Crowd: Death to America! Death to Israel! Death to America! Death to Israel! Death to America! Death to Israel! Death to America! Death to Israel!"

I couldn't find the source of this quote. I was wondering if anyone could provide the "Who, when, and where" this was said. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Is it in the Torah?

When you say Allah, I guess you mean God. At least that's what Jesus called him. The word for God in Aramaic, the language of Jesus, is Allah. It's too bad you have such little reverence for the God Of Jesus.

.I am distraught. I finally found out where my quotation is from. I thought it was a Klan rally. Sheesh.
The unidentified man is a Muslim Imam. The chanters are Shiite Muslims from Iran. They were taking part in the Hadj, which concluded on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

It would have been nice if Pat went to an Islamic scholar to explain Sharia mortages rather than Debbie who herself had to look it up. She is obviously not an expert on Islam and she usually sprinkles a few facts with lots of fiction. She likes to make a crime committed by a Muslim to out to be the reason for the crime. She must always mention the persons religion. It's interesting that Jack Abramov is an orthodox Jew who berated Native Americans, stole their money, then tried to bribe and influence half of Congress. I wonder if she was in on it. Hmmmmmm.

allah is not the God of the Bible.

allah inspired the koran, which denies that anybody can be God's son, thus denying that Jesus is God's Son. The Bible says that Jesus is God's son. The implicaton is that we Christians cannot become God's adopted sons and daughters despite the Bible's assertion that we will become adopted children of God, heirs to His promises, etc.

The fact that the spirit, allah, denies what God has inspired in the Bible means that (1) allah is not the God of the Bible, and (2) allah directly contradicts God, thus allah must be a demon.

I find it facinated that somebody who purports to be ashamed to be an American because "We need to learn to accept people" sees no irony in not condemning Middle Eastern culture, for not only not accepting other religeons (There is not ONE non-islamic church or religeous institution allowed in Saudi Arabia) but killing homosexuals, women, adulterers, and last but not least, killing and making war with people that practice a different form of their own religeon. I wish many of these blame America folks would go spend some time in another country before they start talking about how bad it is here. Oh but before you do, if you're a woman, remember to cover your hair, and don't leave your hotel without a mail relative escorting you...wouldn't want you to get arrested or stoned over in those oh so open minded countries now would we?

to broadcast television for Muslims to execute a “kind of jihad” involving preaching and information disbursement.

You still can't explain why Jesus calls God, Allah in his own language Aramaic. Also, any translation of the Bible into Arabic refers to God in every instance, Old and New Testaments as "Allah."

Allah is genderless and has no plural. Because you are such an expert on Arabic, Hebrew, and Aramaic and you get all your info from Christian hate sites there is no point in arguing with you. The old saying proves true. "When you argue with a fool, others cannot make out the difference." I speak Arabic and my mother taught me Aramaic. I can watch the "Passion of the Christ" without reading the subtitles, in spite of their poor pronunciation. Peace

There are numerous ways to transliterate words in languages with a non-Roman alphabet. Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic can have numerous spellings for the same sound vibration. The same is true with names...Muhammed, Mohammed, Mohammad, Kadaffi, Qadaffi, etc.

I guess I can't argue with another who copies directly from the Christian hate sites. Do you actually believe I am stupid enough to worship a moon god? Perhaps ignorant Christians at the beginning of the 19th century believed thatabout Muslims. The Jews can understand that God has many names. Most modren Christians other than those steeped in middle aged ignorance understand that there is one God who has many names according to language culture and time. I guess you must be a member of the 700 Cult. Pat Robertson has spewed out such nonsense. But he talks to Jesus every day and he heals unknown people on his TV show every day, and then asks for donations. He prayed with Ariel Sharon last year, poor Ariel didn't know that Pat was praying for him to die.

Nice ad hominem attack. That's really showing 'em a thing or two.

Is demon worship a funtion of intelligence (or stupidity), or is it a result of spiritual confusion and willful ignorance?

Wow you can copy from the Christian hate sites, everything out of context. I can do the same with the Bible. You can never convince anybody with such arguments. Nothing to refute because nothing is there. Now get your underwear in a knot and copy another 10 pages, what a waste of time.

At 8:11 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No have him copy another 100 pages. I can't stop laughing. I love religious nuts like that. Common man convert the whole world. Keep giving us more. Don't stop typing!

There is little need for dialogue since you are on a superority trip. The reason that I don't wish to debate is because you have consistantly shown disrespect and contempt for Islam. If you wish to show that hatred for the criminals who play out acts of terrorism you and I are on the same page. However you have constantly trashed a whole religion and culture. There are a number of Muslims who post on this blog, and you will never read a blaspheme against Jesus Christ because we love and honor him as much as the Prophet Muhammed. Prophethood is one. In the Quran, Jesus and Mary are mentioned more than Muhammed. We can point out inconsistancies, contradictions, and plagerism in the Bible because it has changed over the centuries. We are instructed to revere the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospels). However with little understanding and little desire to learn, (you only wish to teach us ignorant heathern Muslims)there is little point in debate.

What makes you think that Muslims are some kind of monolithic block. I don't think that about Jews or Christians. I have worked with both and met fine wonderful people as well as racist bigots. Jews are made up of a number of sects, who quite often do not like each other. Christians make up hundreds of sects. Do you think they are one? Is an Aryan Christian Identity follower the same as a Seventh Day Adventist? Is a Southern Baptist the same as a Mormon? Is a Roman Catholic the same as a Russian Orthodox. You have this idea that Muslims go to their mosques to plot terror and subversion. This is the very same argument that was used agaist the Jews at the beginning of the 20th century when they came to the US to escape Russia and other oppressive regimes. When you have a religion of the magatude of Islam ( 1 out of every 5 people...soon to be 1 out of every 4....25% of the human race are believers), don't you think that a small percentage will be religious nuts? The vast majority of Muslims in the US and the rest of the world simply wish to raise their children, practice their faith (pray, fast, give alms, visit the holy sites)yet you want to violite their rights and arrest all of them. My aged parents, who came here from Syria with $20.00 and worked and sacrificed to put myself and brothers and sisters through college. What is their crime? All you know is to yell out this jihad nonsense like Debbie S. Shame on her, especially being Jewish, when it was once argued that they made matza balls out of childrens blood and they poisoned the wells and raped babies. You have taken that same mentality against Muslims. Why don't you meet with some interfaith groups, there are many of them where Jews, Christians, and Muslims work together to develop tolerance and mutual understanding instead of this off the wall extremist form of Christianity. Peace, Shalom, Salaam
