Protesters Say Carrying Mexican Flag Isn't Meant as Lack of U.S. Loyalty

Many Americans have been turned off and angered by the sight of many participants in the recent protests against a crackdown on illegal immigration carrying Mexican flags. But protesters and their backers are saying the flags are meant as a sign of cultural pride, and are being misconstrued as a lack of loyalty to the U.S.

Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers of America with Cesar Chavez, told AP, "The Mexican flag is like a symbol of dignity and identity and pride for the people who carry it. ... Pride and roots is what it is. It definitely does not mean separation or nationalism in the sense that we want to go back to Mexico." Gabriela Lemus, director of policy and legislation at the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), compared it to another ethnic group carrying their flag, telling AP, "Nobody gets upset with the Irish on St. Patrick's Day." But, she said, LULAC is encouraging protesters to carry both the U.S. and Mexican flags.

Isidro D. Ortiz, a political scientist and professor of Chicano and Chicana studies at San Diego State University, had slightly different take. He agreed that the flag is primarily a symbol of Mexican pride, but said in the current climate, Latinos also want to express dissatisfaction with how they're treated. He told AP, "[They] have been trying for some time to imagine themselves as part of the United States. What they've experienced is refusal."

Does it bother you when the protesters against an illegal immigration crackdown carry the Mexican flag?

What do you think of Professor Ortiz's statement that carrying the Mexican flag is also meant to show dissatisfaction by Latinos at how they've been treated?

Do you believe that the U.S. has shown Latinos a refusal to accept them as part of the U.S.?

It amazes me the support being handed to people illegally entering America. It shows a lack of respect for people who play by the rules and follow the legal channels that have been in place for years to enter the USA. The loudest idiot is Mexico’s Vincente Fox who screams when we hint at immigration laws like Mexico already has. Mexico is brutal to any ‘illegals’ who dare try to enter their country. You say they’re doing jobs Americans don’t want? What? Have you been near a construction site in the past ten years? If you yelled INS you’d get run over by the fleeing workers. Don’t tell me Americans don’t want Carpentry, Roofing, Carpet Laying, Mason or Painter jobs that are being done by illegal ‘Manuel Labor’. Those are family raising jobs that American’s have done for years. The problem is Construction companies see that they can pocket a few bucks and not have to deal with unions, safety issues, paying out insurance, unemployment, or even matching employee social security contributions by hiring the un-Americans.
A real puzzler is when I see adults and teens marching to support these law breakers. While no doubt some are sympathetic to their cause, I think many just want to be part of something bigger then themselves. Yet if they took time to think about what it will cost us, them, and our grandchildren, they might want to protest against the trespassers. Social Security will suffer when these people apply for and receive dollars - whether they contributed to it or not. As will Welfare, Food Stamps, Medical programs, SSI, and schools overburdened because renters with children don’t pay a dime in taxes to upkeep the schools, pay salaries or buy books or pay for free lunch programs.
I just don’t get it. They’re protesting to let illegal aliens come and stay in America while law abiding people are waiting their turn for legal entry into our country under our visa program. Hey protesters - Riddle me this… Imagine a line at the welfare office, bank, supermarket, theater, restaurant or high school cafeteria… Would you smile and wink if people started jumping to the head of the line in front of others? And would you protest for their right to enter illegally ahead of the line if it was you waiting your turn behind them? Yeah. That’s what I thought.
