Mystery Surrounds Plane Crash

Doug Hagmann from the Northeast Intelligence Network stops by with the latest...

WITNESS ACCOUNTS: "THE PLANE BLEW-UP BEFORE IT HIT THE WATER"

20 December 2005: Initially it appeared to be a catastrophic mechanical failure that brought down Chalks Ocean Airways Flight 101, a 58 year-old, a propeller-driven, twin-engine Grumman G-73 Turbo Mallard carrying twenty-(20) people - 18 passengers and two crew members. The crash was the deadliest plane crash in the U.S. in nearly three years, taking place at about 2:40 pm, shortly after take-off from Miami Beach and destined for the island of Bimini in the Bahamas. The last plane crash of similar magnitude involved a USAirways Express commuter flight that crashed in Charlotte, North Carolina in January 2003, killing 21 people. Chalks Ocean Airways has been billed as America's oldest surviving airline whose aircraft has carried celebrities and diplomats and appeared in the opening of the 1980's TV series Miami Vice. According to FAA safety records, incidents involving the Grumman G-73 aircraft have been few - only four recorded over the last three decades - and none involved any injuries let alone fatalities. Monday's crash, however, broke that safety record.

When a search is done using the tail number of the plane (N2969) at Airsafe's Form for Querying the NTSB Accident Database, three incidents involving the same plane (Grumman G-73T and G-73-T) turn up.

The tail number is found at Wikipedia's entry for Chalk's Ocean Airlines Flight 101.

Here's a synopsis of the three incidents:

On Feb. 10, 1984, the flight control system suffered a total failure of the elevator trim/tab control.

On April 17, 1984, the airplane hit a submerged object and the nose wheel collapsed.

On August 14, 1987, another incident occurred but no details are given - this incident occurred in Bimini.

It would be of value to find out what happened to this airplane in 1987.
