Theater Owners Call For Blocking Cell Phones
The National Association of Theater Owners feels that asking moviegoers to turn off cell phones isn't enough to stop the annoyance of cell phone use in cinemas and wants to go a step further: blocking cell phone signals in theaters.
John Fithian, the president of the trade association, told the Los Angeles Times that theater owners "have to block rude behavior." He said that some theaters already have a no cell phone policy, asking visitors to check their phones at the door. His groups plans to petition the FCC for permission to block cell phone signals within movie theaters.
But the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association -- a Washington-based cell phone lobby that is also known as CTIA-the Wireless Association -- said it would fight back. "We're opposed to the use of any blocking technology, because it interferes with people's ability to use a wireless device in an emergency situation," CTIA spokesman Joseph Farren told the Times.
Great idea! Long overdue! They need this technology in restaurants and churches too.

I think this is a horrible idea! What if someone is having a heart attack in a theater. Someone's cell phone could save critical time in trying to get emergency medical help to them in a timely manner.
People just need to learn to be more considerate. Turn your cell phone ringers off or to vibrate when in these situations and get up and leave if you NEED to carry on a conversation.
Bottom line - don't act like your sitting at home in your boxer shorts when your out in public.
Outstanding idea! If someone has a heart attack have someone else step outside the theater and call 911.
I hope your the one with the heart attack and the person trying to get outside the theater can't fight through the crowd of teenie bopper high school students to get to the phone.
"People just need to learn to be more considerate."
Yeah. Right. Like THAT'S gonna happen.
If it's that simple and easy, perhaps you can teach the teeny bopper high-school students to be more considerate.
From a practical point of view, neutralizing the cell phones is a great idea, however it's not enough to make the theatre experience enjoyable. Another step in the right direction would be to set sharp-toothed bear traps to catch teeny bopper high-school students.
Really, this is all about the major movie theater corporations wanting to fill the seats, as well they should. However, as in every capitalist business enterprise, rarely does limiting your customer's freedoms translate into increased profits. If they truly want to increase the bottom line, they should try lobbying Hollywood to produce better product.
they should only allow sprint phones into theaters. they dont work anywhere anyway.
