Catholics condemn South Park episode about Virgin Mary

KXAN is reporting...
Editors: Note nature of content in second paragraph NEW YORK _ The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights is condemning an episode of "South Park" that it says "defiled" the Virgin Mary.

The cartoon, which runs on Comedy Central, features an episode this week titled "Bloody Mary," in which a South Park character claims to have been sprayed by blood from a body orifice of a Virgin Mary statue. When Pope Benedict investigates, he declares that she's just having her period.

The Catholic League is calling on the board chairman of Viacom, which owns Comedy Central, to apologize to Catholics and stop the episode from airing the next several nights as scheduled.

The Catholic League notes that Viacom chairman Joseph Califano is a practicing Catholic, and that today is the church's feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

Speaking as a generic-Christian, ex-Catholic, I say that this cartoon is more crude than it needs to be, but I acknowledge that this cartoon or any other forum has a legitimate right to address the frequent incidents of people setting up shrines and praying to tree stumps, dirty windows, dirty tailgates, pan cakes, potato chips, squashes, etc. all of which have some vague resemblence -- just as a cloud can look like anything -- to what people imagine Jesus or Mary look like. Many readers won't be surprised to know that I consider this nonsense treading much too close to idolatry.

I just re-read my first post, and I realize I didn't really address the correct subject: bleeding statues. There are literally thousands of such incidents annually, most of them involving Hindu gods or some other foreign god. I believe many of these really happen, though many must be frauds, and I believe this is a sign of demonic involvement in those cases which are not frauds. Folks won't be surprised to know that an ex-catholic like me considers catholic devotion to statues, bleeding or otherwise, to be foolishness at best and an opening for satan to deceive them at worst.

The producers of South Park are equal opportunity offenders. They constantly spoof Judaism on their show. They made a movie with puppets that was offensive to Islam and Arabs. They have done a spoof on pedophile priests, now this spoof on Catholic idol worship. It always goes over the top, but that is what makes the show so funny.

Nicely done. I suspect you're an experienced debater.

I'd be interested in how shit can be holy.
