NAACP calls for compensation fund for Katrina victims

Bruce S. Gordon, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), today urged Congress to establish a Hurricane Katrina Compensation Fund similar to one that was created for victims of the September 11 terrorist attack.

"When congress returns tomorrow, the first order of business should be to set up this fund to help hurricane victims get back on their feet,” said Gordon. “You got people who lost their jobs, homes and had all of their assets depleted. In some cases, families lost their bread winner. If the victims of 911 deserved compensation, and they did, then certainly these victims deserve no less to help restart their lives.”

I don't remember a compensation fund being set up to help out Central Floridians after our three hurricanes last year. They must have forgot.

Hmmm, from what I saw on the news reports, it looked to me like those NAACP members already got their "compensation" in the form of TVs & Nikes. But I guess I'm just a bad white person for thinking such a thing. -or- Maybe they should get their compensation from the mayor who over the past 10 years diverted over half the federal aid for levee construction, maintenance, and repair, into funding a marina and support the gambling ships..... Next we'll hear that Katrina is a white name that intentionally attacked N.O.

Great idea NAACP. Let's reward someone for a natural disaster.

Here's a thought- instead of looking for freebies from the Government, why don't Kwesai Mfume, Jesse Jackson, The REHVRUND Al Sharpton, Oprah, Denzel, Jamie Foxx, Kanye West, and the rest of the critics fund the proposed "victims" compensation fund and let these people come stay at their house for a while...better yet, why not open up one of their extra houses.

I'd like to see the Red Cross Shelters begin incorporating the evacuee residents into the volunteer program. People are beginning to receive debit cards, $2,000 a piece/ to purchase needed items. I think it is high time that the people being sheltered are made to feel useful by contributing their time and energy to the upkeep of the shelter.

I have to agree with the NAACP believing they were entitled to this money, though. I was never for family compensation of the 9/ll victims. My father died of cancer, I was not compensated, my friend's father was killed by a drunk driver, no compensation there. By giving those victims the large sum of money that they were given, of course opens this topic up to any disastor.

Your right Pat, there was no compensation fund for Central FL, as a matter of fact a lot of people in Central FL still have blue tarps on their homes.

You must be my wealthy Very White neighbor that even had his landscaing done here last year by FEMA. He even received a check for chain saws and generators he did not own. He many just won't move out of his 5 million dollar home in a MUD HOLE. We should not tolirate people building NEW in MUD here in Florida. They have water standing TO DAY from the little showers. City is pumping at your expence.
