The real reason New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin didn't use the school buses
They weren't good enough! He wanted a fleet of 500 Greyhounds. NewsMax is reporting...
Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead.
"I need 500 buses, man," he told WWL. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."
Nagin described his response:
"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

This is beyond idiotic. In a natural disaster such as this hurricane - or the tsunamis on the other side of the world - I'm sure that ANY form of transportation would be welcomed and even fought over be it a school bus or even a hearse. How on EARTH can the Mayor of New Orleans think that these buses are safe for children to get to school everyday but not safe enough to run from near-certain death just once?
beggars can't be chooser's! (kind of has a double meaning here)
Exactly how many days of advance warning did New Orleans have while
Katrina was strenghtening and moseying up to their door? I'm only a highschool graduate and I believe I could have come up with some kind of plan in 4-5 DAYS!!! Rooney is right! It is BEYOND idiotic! Mayor N. should be tried for depraved indifference - one count for each dead body that is recovered. PEOPLE DIED, Mr. Mayor! What %#@! difference does it make what the bus is like??? It is absolutely criminal!
While they're at it, they can try Ms. Governor along with him! Geez! No wonder people think so poorly of the us Southerners!
Why didn't he consult with the Mexicans? They're experts at moving people across borders.
