Whoops! Larry King Forgets to Ask Landis 'Did You Cheat?'

Imagine you're Larry King. You've landed the first interview with Floyd Landis, the winner of the Tour de France with a great feel-good story - until he flunked a drug test.

What would be the first question you'd ask? OK, this is Larry King. Not known as the 'king' of the hardball, so to speak. So grant Larry a few warm-up questions to put Floyd at ease. But eventually, at some point, as painful as it might be, DON'T YOU HAVE TO ASK LANDIS IF HE CHEATED?? I mean, what the heck else is the purpose of the interview?

But along with millions of others [OK, Larry's ratings haven't been that great in recent years. Let's say 'thousands of others'] I waited in vain for a question that never came. Larry King never asked Floyd Landis if he took performance-enhancing drugs that accounted for the high testosterone ratio levels the post-race test detected.

You'll notice I had to pull the image of the rally. They(the station with depends on it) had the photographer contact me and demand I take it down, claiming copyright violations. This shows you how petty they really are at the old folks home up the dial. They're determined to keep the failure of their rally a secret. They don't want you to know how embarrassingly low the turn out was. Will they do the right thing and offer advertisers a refund because they failed to deliver?

A local radio station and a nationally syndicated host promised a crowd of 10,000. According to the Orlando Police Dept. the only got 5,000.

Organizers announced the crowd had reached 10,000 at Saturday's event on Orange Avenue in front of City Hall, but Orlando police estimated about half that.

I hope advertisers can get a refund. Their stations motto should be..."We under-deliver!"

There's only one AM in town that can deliver a crowd that size and you're listening to it 540WFLA.

Congressman John Mica joins me at 8AM to discuss Orlando's murder rate

MURDER SPIKE PROMPTS MICA ACTION

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. John L. Mica will convene a meeting with federal, State and local law enforcement officials Friday, June 23, 2006 to discuss action relating to the problem of a dramatic spike in murders in both the Orlando and Jacksonville areas.

"The significant increase in homicides in Orlando and Jacksonville require both a review of current efforts and an action plan to coordinate federal, State and local resources to get a handle on this explosion of violence,” said Rep. Mica.

The Congressman, a Member and past Chairman of the U.S. House Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Subcommittee, will be joined by Office of National Drug Control Policy Assistant Deputy Director Joe Keefe of the Washington, D.C. Drug Czar’s office, to meet with local officials. The Directors of the North Florida and Central Florida HIDTA, respectively Ed Williams and William T. Fernandez, and representatives for the Orlando Mayor, Orlando Police Department, Orange County Commission, State Attorney and Members of the Jacksonville City Council have also been invited.

"Our goal is to bring together all levels of government and develop a successful strategy to marshal whatever resources necessary to combat the growing murder rate,” Rep. Mica stated. “Unfortunately, many of these murders are related to illegal narcotics.”

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando outpaced the national increase with a nearly 30% rise in murders. In Jacksonville, according to the 2006 UCR Crime Report, during the months of January to April there were 46 homicides in 2006 compared to 22 in 2005, a 109.1% increase.

Rep. Mica was successful in securing designation of Central Florida as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) in October, 1997. This federal designation under law provides additional resources from national agencies to help the State and local governments in combating illegal narcotics trafficking.

Rep. Mica, working with former Rep. Tillie Fowler, helped establish the North Florida HIDTA in 2001, with federal recognition that the area was a frequent transit point for interstate drug distribution. Like the Central Florida HIDTA, the program enhances and coordinates drug control efforts among local, State and federal agencies.

Today's Hate Mail

Hi, Pat.

I'm a liberal with a fatal attraction to right-wing talk radio and often listen to your show while driving to work between 7 and 7:30. We disagree on virtually everything, but I do sense in your tone and treatment of callers an essential decency and milk of human kindness (albeit 2%) missing in the likes of Savage, Burke and the anorexic harridan Colter. Anyway, I've been fascinated and appalled by your weekly interviews with the U.S. military flak about the "real story" in Iraq, in which you gamely, desperately search for any scintilla of "good" news like a pathetic old miner panning for gold in an exhausted creek. There you were again this morning, panning like crazy, virtually begging the flak to say that what is happening now in Iraq is NOT a civil war. I almost felt sorry for the old miner when the flak - in all good intellectual conscience - could not give you the answer you were hoping for, against all evidence. It's sad that defenders of this fiasco have come to this - a semantic argument over whether 100 dead a day is a actually a "civil war." As I said, Pat, I sense in you a fundamentally decent and obviously bright guy. But it must be said of you and Limbaugh and Gallagher and Medved and Hedinger (give my regards to Bud) and all the other right-wing talkers who beat the drums for this war....there is a lot of blood on your microphones. How many more American lives - except your own of course - are you willing to sacrifice for this tragic folly perpetrated by the arrested adolescent in the White House?

Tickets Buy New Police Cars

Starting next year in Illinois, if you get a ticket and want to keep it off your driving record, you can pay an additional $25. The money will go toward buying more police cars.

Is there something distasteful about a police department having an incentive to write tickets? Does it make public-safety sense to buy your way out of losing points on your license?

The Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, Ill., did a nice job of breaking down where court costs are supposed to go on a typical ticket. This is a useful idea, wherever you are.

Zoo gets cash from schools

SANFORD -- At a time when the state says Seminole County needs more money to build classrooms, the School Board has been dipping into its construction funds to give $1 million to the Central Florida Zoological Park.

The money could have paid for six or seven new classrooms, which would reduce the crowding in several dozen classes. Instead, it went toward an education building at the zoo, which officials say will benefit county children, too.

A $200,000 installment on a $1 million pledge is included in the $841 million annual budget School Board members tentatively approved Tuesday. The board has given $600,000 already in three annual payments and expects to wrap up its commitment next year.

"It's a good investment and a good experience for the kids," said School Board Chairman Jeanne Morris, who defends the zoo contribution.

Hi Pat,
Please forgive me, but I missed some of your show this morning---so maybe you already started on this issue and I just didn’t hear it. I am sure by now you know that the Seminole County School Board gave $1,000,000 of tax payer dollars to the zoo. Not that the zoo isn’t a worthy cause, but where do they get off giving my money to a nonprofit? If I want to support the zoo I will do that on my own. I don’t need the government taking my money and giving it away for me. ESPECIALLY when they have portable buildings at nearly every campus in the county.

I think you need to nail these idiots to the wall. Several of them are up for re-election!!!!!!!

P.S. I just talked to my daughter (a Seminole county school teacher) and told her about the story. She told me that one of the other teachers was told she couldn’t get any pencils for her class because there was no money in the budget. She will let her friend know that the giraffes have her pencils.

Why would Orlando pay $600,000 for this house?

If you had $600,000 to spend, you could buy a five-bedroom, four-bath home in Hunter's Creek, complete with pool and vaulted ceilings -- or, if you're using Orlando taxpayers' money, you might spend that much on a weather-beaten rental home in Parramore.

If you had $1.4 million, you might consider a lakefront four-bedroom house in Belle Isle. Orlando taxpayers, however, are poised to spend that much on a run-down diner in the same neighborhood.

All told, Orlando officials are preparing to spend $6.8 million on five pieces of property that make up about a half-block of land in economically depressed Parramore, with no public discussion.

Mayor Buddy Dyer said the city has no immediate plans for the 1.8 acres. However, among the possibilities are a parking garage for a new Orlando Magic arena or leverage to persuade Home Depot to move a division headquarters to Orlando.

The Paul Revere Ride Saturday 7/29/06

Jennifer Craven, owner of Tattudio, a prominent tattoo shop in Longwood and a biker activist stopped by the show to discuss Saturday's Ride. The ride is designed to raise awareness of the Illegal Immigration issue.

Remember when MTV was all about music? Heck, I don't even remember when baby brother VH1 just played music videos. But to honor MTV's 25th anniversary next month, VH1 Classic will go back in time and replay the first 24 hours of MTV's programming.

For those wishing to schedule vacation or call in sick to work, it starts Monday, July 31 at midnight. (MTV kicked off on Aug 1, 1981.) I'm wondering if I can just sit home, drink malt liquor, eat pork rinds and call it work, since I'm on the 80s beat anyway. (Steve's boss responds: Umm, no.)

Texas state trooper Steven Stone Shot At Pointblank Range During Traffic Stop by Illegal Aliens

From CBS- A state trooper in Tyler, Texas defines the phrase "lucky to be alive."

On March 22, Steven Stone was shot several times at point blank range during a traffic stop by the two occupants of the pickup truck he pulled over.

The drama was recorded on his dashboard camera.

Stone survived injuries to his chest and neck.

On The Early Show Friday, Stone told co-anchor Harry Smith he "originally stopped them for speed(ing). When the suspects finally do stop, I ask the driver to get out, and he leaves his door open. That's a pretty busy road. I didn't want someone to pass by and hit his door. So I go back there to close it. When I do, I see an open bottle of alcohol in the vehicle. I confiscate that, ask the driver if he has any weapons on him. He tells me he has a pocketknife. I take that from him or get that away from him. He gives me a Mexican driver's license, and I was going to go back and run it (through the computer), but I wasn't real comfortable. I start patting him down, and I find drugs (marijuana) in his coat.

"At that point, I was going to place him under arrest, and as I'm putting the handcuffs on him, I notice a pistol magazine in his pocket, and the passenger steps out, and things got real bad from there."

Remember they're here doing the jobs Americans refuse to do!

3 Teens Accused Of Beating 9-Year-Old

Three teens in Orange County, Fla., are accused of beating a 9-year-old and hitting him in the head with a handgun, according to Local 6 News.

Investigators said Scott Dematyjora, 14, Brian Sipp, 19, and Julian Thompson, 18, were arrested on felony battery charges.

How pathetic! A 19 year old pistol whipping a 9 year old(3rd grader), what a man! But then again that's how you earn respect in the hood.

"We are frustrated and disappointed, but we are O.K.," said Bob Elazon, an Illinois resident who complained the U.S. evacuation was badly organized.

Others echoed her complaints about the U.S. Embassy.

"The guard was so rude and said there was no evacuation plan, " Michael Russo, 23, of Tucson, Ariz, of his visit to the embassy. "On Wednesday and Thursday I asked them if there was a plan and they looked at me like I was crazy.

You have evacuees bitching about the cost as well(Why should I have to pay?). I'd put them all on a plane and drop right back off in Lebanon. Ingrates!


Americans trying to leave complain of constantly busy U.S. Embassy telephone lines and incomplete information. The government isn't allowing pets, so they must be left behind. Luggage is limited to one 15-pound bag. And evacuees initially were told they must agree to pay the U.S. government for the cost of a flight from Beirut to Cyprus, about $150-$200.

The reimbursement clause, revoked Tuesday, had especially irritated some.

"It's ironic that U.S. taxpayers are paying for the bombs that are being dropped on Lebanon but not for evacuating U.S. citizens," said Daniel Koechlein, 19, a student from American University in Washington, D.C.

Man Shoots Attacking Pit Bulls Off Neighbor
Victim: 'I Really Thought That The End Was Here'

LEESBURG, Fla. -- A man in Leesburg who heard screams for help from his neighbor during an attack by two pit bulls grabbed his shotgun and opened fire, possibly saving the man's life, according to a Local 6 News report.

Authorities with the Lake County Sheriff's Office said two pit bulls attacked Joe Pipala, 61, at his home on Maple Street in Leesburg Sunday.

Pipala said he thought he was going to die during the attack.

"I really thought that the end was here," said victim Joe Pipala. "I hit one with a four-by-four and I could have sworn that I knocked a tooth out and it and it didn't even stun it."

Pipala's neighbor Jeff Lint heard the cries for help and grabbed his gun.

"I heard Joe yelling, 'Jeff help, Jeff, help,'" Lint said. "It was a scream of help. They would not let him alone. They were just all over him. I know Joe and I know that he has a heart condition. As a last resort, I got the 12-gauge shotgun and I come back over."

Lint fired and hit one of the pit bulls.

"It went down and did a 360 three different times and then got up and came after me again," Lint said. "So, I unloaded a second shot into it."

The dog died from the gunshot wounds.

The dead dog's owner was fined $50, the report said.

The second dog involved in the attack belonged to one of the man's friends and was spotted back on its property later Sunday.

There have to be serious consequences for irresponsible pet owners, including jail time. A $50 fine doesn't cut it. What's it going to take to get the second dog off the street and euthanized? Does it have to kill somebody?

On track for commuter rail

The Sentinel is at it again! More 19th Century solutions to our 21st Century traffic problems.

Town centers with shops, offices and homes could sprout near stations

How would you like to walk a few minutes to a train station and zip to work in an air-conditioned rail car -- and then return the same way? Once back in the neighborhood, you could walk to grocery stores, restaurants and businesses to run errands.

Sound too good to be true?

It could happen in Central Florida, where plans for a 61-mile commuter-rail system are moving toward reality. If transportation officials can cement a deal to have cities along the route help pay for the system and CSX Railroad agrees to sell the tracks to the state, then the region's first attempt at speedy mass transit could affect the way we grow.

The project, which could cost as much as $500 million, could come together this summer.

If planners take the right steps -- and so far they are off to a slow start -- the rail system could help spur self-contained, walkable neighborhoods around stations from DeBary to Orlando to Poinciana. Replete with grocery stores, drugstores, parks and restaurants, they'd be the kind of small communities that grew up around town squares in the era before interstate highways.

In turn, the new approach to development could help reduce sprawl by anchoring more growth in a central transportation corridor running through the region.

So-called smart growth that is focused around mass transit -- transit-oriented development, in planner lingo -- has happened in other communities around the nation.

Is Israel To Blame For The Middle East?

The Middle East is ablaze with violence that could break out into a regional war. The United States is blaming the terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah and their nation sponsors, Syria and Iran for the violence. Yet could the cause for the turmoil be Israel itself? Could Hamas and Hezbollah be acting similar to how the American revolutionaries acted in our own revolution?
Are the Arabs just acting as Israel acts?

Able to discuss this Dr. Britt Minshall, a leading minister and former member of INTERPOL. Dr. Minshall blames the Israelis for the current violence. He states that Israel has gone unchecked since 1948 and as a result we now see groups such as Hamas and Hezoballah rising to the
forefront. He believes that Israel must be held accountable for its actions, even if it means the defeat of Israel.

Dr. Minshall and Debbie Schlussel slugged it out this morning on the show.

Coaches Accused Of Using Screws On Gymnasts

Local6 is reporting...

Two Central Florida gymnastics coaches are facing child cruelty charges after being accused of using screws to discipline young children who performed with poor technique, according to a Local 6 News report.

Two mothers recently came forward claiming coaches Michael Turner, 34, and Christopher Bonn, 18, at Ace Gymnastics in Longwood jabbed their children with the screws.

The first woman said she noticed wounds on the bodies of her two children and went to authorities, Local 6 News reported.

After the first complaint, another woman came forward with similar accusations.

Investigators said the Turner and Bonn would jab the children so hard that it would break the skin.

The children were subjected to a type of disciplinary action that left scars on their bodies, according to the sheriff's office.

Who decides medical treatment for a 16 year old?

Teen Fighting In Court to Have Alternative Medical Treatment for His Cancer

A Virginia teen is fighting in court for his right to have alternative medical treatment for his lymphatic cancer instead of chemotherapy. His parents are also fighting attempts to remove the 16-year-old boy from their custody over the issue.

Starchild Abraham Cherrix -- who goes by Abraham -- has Hodgkin's disease, and when he underwent three months of chemotherapy last year, it made him extremely weak. So when he found out in February that his cancer was active again, he decided, against doctor's advice, that he didn't want to go through chemotherapy again. Instead, he went on a sugar-free organic diet, began taking herbs, and started visiting a clinic in Mexico. Soon after, a social worker asked a judge to require Cherrix to continue conventional treatment. The family believes a doctor reported them to Social Services.

A juvenile court judge issued a temporary order in May finding Cherrix's parents neglectful for supporting their son's decision. He also ordered the parents to share custody with the Accomack County Department of Social Services. Cherrix's father, Jay Cherrix, explained to AP, "What is boils down to is does the American family have the right to decide on the health of their child, or is the government allowed to come in and determine that themselves and threaten one way or the other to split our family up."

Three boys ages 6 to 8 are thought to have been involved in the incidents in Leesburg.

LEESBURG -- City officials said a group of young boys attending a Leesburg day camp had a troubling requirement for membership into their secret club -- sex acts.

Ever since another camper reported the boys' acts on June 22, the city, the boys' parents and advocates for children have worried about where two 6-year-olds and an 8-year-old learned the behavior.

They still don't have an answer.

A police investigation and interviews by children's experts did not reveal evidence the boys had been abused, the most common explanation for sexual behavior among young children.

The city says the three boys hid under a playground platform five to 12 times and engaged in oral sex acts while others played at Rogers Park. But an angry mother of one of the boys wants the city to take more action.

"She's dissatisfied and wants heads to roll," Deputy City Manager Jay Evans said Tuesday. "Our investigation has not revealed any failure to respond . . . We had a voluntary event, deliberately concealed, that could never be expected."

CHARGING MEXICO

A Dallas hospital plans to send bills to Mexico to pay for medical care for illegal immigrants. They say it’s not fair to ask American taxpayers to pay for the care of illegal immigrants.

Man allowed to board aircraft appeared to have bomb components

Houston airport incident...

The report states that a man with a Middle Eastern name and a ticket for a Delta Airlines flight to Atlanta shook his head when screeners asked if he had a laptop computer in his baggage, but an X-ray machine operator detected a laptop.

A search of the man's baggage revealed a clock with a 9-volt battery taped to it and a copy of the Quran, the report said. A screener examined the man's shoes and determined that the "entire soles of both shoes were gutted out."

No explosive material was detected, the report states. A police officer was summoned and questioned the man, examined his identification, shoes and the clock, then cleared him for travel, according to the report.

A TSA screener disagreed with the officer, saying "the shoes had been tampered with and there were all the components of (a bomb) except the explosive itself," the report says.

Shaughnessey of the Boston Globe: Orlando 'Ultimate Yahoo Town'

What is it with Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessey and Florida cities? Trouble booking a tee time? Lines too long at his favorite Disney World ride? Bad OJ in his screwdriver, perhaps?

For the second time this year, Shaughnessey took the occasion of a TV appearance to gratuitously label a Florida city a 'yahoo town'. As I wrote about here, back in January, appearing on ESPN's 'Rome is Burning', he called Jacksonville a 'yahoo town,' comparing it unfavorably with Detroit, which he dubbed a 'real city' because "you can get the New York Times here."

Appearing again today on 'Rome is Burning', Shaughnessey was back on the yahoo beat. The topic was whether basketball great LeBron James would remain in Cleveland, and Shaughnessey reviewed the history of other superstars remaining in smaller markets. That's when, out of the blue, he called Orlando "the ultimate yahoo town." So out-of-left-field was the comment that it left host Rome muttering.

Is this Shaughnessey's one-man vendetta against the Sunshine State, or is it reflective of an MSM culture that sneers at the sunbelt?

Violent Christian game riles critics

Sex and violence are the bread and butter of the video game industry. But a new game aimed at Christian teens is banking on blockbuster status by replacing the sex with prayer -- while keeping the violence.

Players can either join the Christians and kill nonbelievers, or join the demonic forces and smite Christians, in "Left Behind: Eternal Forces," a video game due out this fall as part of the wildly popular "Left Behind" franchise of novels.

"Eternal Forces" is the latest effort by Tyndale House Publishers to profit from the "Left Behind" novels, a series about the apocalypse that its authors claim has won over converts to Christianity.... The game purports to teach Christian values while allowing players to kill in the name of either Christianity or the Antichrist.

The article continues:

The game's most vocal opponent is conservative Christian lawyer Jack Thompson... [who] published his book, "Out of Harm's Way" (Tyndale, $19.99), last November. He has since severed ties with Tyndale because of "Eternal Forces."

He said Tyndale, in backing the game, has "personally broken my heart." He accused the company of abandoning morality by exploiting a "cash cow" in the "Left Behind" series, and said co-author LaHaye "ought to be ashamed of himself."

"We've got a company that's really prostituting the name `Christian' and using it as a sales tool to market to Christian kids that which is harmful by any other name," Thompson said.

What the West needs to know about Islam

Main Idea
Virtually every major Western leader has over the past several years expressed the view that Islam is a peaceful religion and that those who commit violence in its name are fanatics who misinterpret its tenets. This claim, while widely circulated, rarely attracts serious public examination. Relying primarily on Islam’s own sources, this documentary demonstrates that Islam is a violent, expansionary ideology that seeks the destruction or subjugation of other faiths, cultures, and systems of government.

Content
The documentary consists of original interviews, citations from Islamic texts, Islamic artwork, computer-animated maps, footage of Western leaders, and Islamic television broadcasts. Its tone is sober, methodical, and compelling.

Outline of the Documentary
Introduction
We hear from prominent Western leaders that Islam is peaceful and that those who commit violence in its name are heterodox fanatics.

Part 1: ‘There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet’
Our interviewees affirm their belief that Islamic violence is entirely orthodox behavior for Muslims and stems directly from the teachings and example of the Prophet Muhammad and the commands of the Koran. We learn that the example of Muhammad is one of a violent warlord who killed numerous people. The Koran – the verbatim words of Allah – prescribes violence against non-Muslims and Muhammad is the perfect example of the Koran in action.

Part 2: The Struggle
We learn that jihad, while literally meaning 'struggle', in fact denotes war fought against non-Muslims in order to bring the rule of Islamic law to the world. Violent death in jihad is, according to the Koran, the only assurance of salvation. One of our interviewees tells of his personal involvement in terrorism and his leaving Islam.

Part 3: Expansion
Following the death of Muhammad, his 'rightly-guided' successors carried his wars to three continents, fighting, enslaving, and massacring countless Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Hindus, and others. Islam did not spread through evangelism or through its natural appeal, but through aggressive wars of conquest. The Crusades were largely a belated response on the part of Christian Europe to rescue Christians in the Holy Land suffering under Muslim oppression. The Muslim world today, while no longer the unified empire of the Caliphs, is exceptional for being responsible for the vast majority of conflicts around the world and for almost all of international terrorism.

Part 4: ‘War is Deceit’
A great problem with Western efforts to understand Islam is due to the Islamic principle of 'religious deception', which enjoins Muslims to deceive non-Muslims in order to advance the cause of Islam. Muslim groups today in the West employ deception and omission to give the impression that 'Islam is a religion of peace', an utter fiction.

Part 5: More than a Religion
The most important characteristic of Islam not understood by the West is that it is more a system of government than a personal religion. Throughout its history, Islam has never recognized a distinction between the religious and the secular/political. Islamic law governs every aspect of religious, political, and personal action, which amounts to a form of totalitarianism that is divinely enjoined to dominate the world, analogous in many ways to Communism.

Part 6: The House of War
Islamic theology divides the world into two spheres locked in perpetual combat, dar al-Islam (House of Islam - where Islamic law predominates), and dar al-harb (House of War - the rest of the world). It is incumbent on dar al-Islam to fight and conquer dar al-harb and permanently assimilate it. Muslims in Western nations are called to subvert the secular regimes in which they now live in accordance with Allah's command. Due to political correctness and general government and media irresponsibility, the danger posed by observant Muslims in the West remains largely unappreciated.

President Sits for 60th Birthday Interview with Larry King

President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush sat down with Larry King on the president's 60th birthday yesterday (July 6th) for an interview on King's CNN show, Larry King Live. Asked how he felt on this milestone birthday, Bush said, "I feel pretty young. I'm surprised I feel so good. I can remember when I was a kid looking at people 60. I said, 'Man, there goes an ancient person.' But I feel great."

The interview covered a wide range of topics, including the ongoing war in Iraq. Bush insisted that it was the right decision to invade Iraq, and that he would do the same thing again, even knowing that there were no weapons of mass destruction. Why the hell is he denying that we found any WMDs? We found at least 500 see HERE. And when asked about the polls, which show the lowest approval numbers of his presidency as well as weak support for the war, Bush said they don't bother him. He explained:

["You cannot achieve big goals and accomplish hard things if you're worried about opinion polls. The president that chases the opinion poll is the president that will have failed policy, in my judgment. I like to tell people I would rather be -- when history looks back, I'd rather be judged as solving problems and being correct rather than being popular."]

Bush also spoke about the controversial revelations by the New York Times and other newspapers about secret programs being used to try to track down and stop terrorists. The Times especially has drawn sometimes vitriolic condemnation, while the paper has defended itself by saying the American people have a right to know what their government is doing, especially considering that there are questions as to the legality of those actions. Bush spoke about his concerns:

["I'm disturbed that people would feel comfortable enough going to newspapers with state secrets. It doesn't make any sense to me to give the enemy our game plan on how we're going to deal with them."]

King also asked Bush about the sudden death Wednesday of former Enron CEO Ken Lay, a friend and financial backer of the president's political campaigns who was convicted earlier this year of deceiving investors and employees about Enron's financial health before it went bankrupt. Bush said:

["My hope is that his heart was right with the Lord, and I feel really sorry for his wife."]

On some other issues:

*When asked about Osama bin Laden, Bush predicted we will ultimately get him, saying, "It's just a matter of persistence and patience." OK we've gone from "Wanted Dead or Alive" to "He's not important anymore" to "It's just a matter of persistence and patience." If we're still going after him why did we disband the special CIA task force assigned with getting him?

*Bush said we are better prepared to deal with another hurricane disaster like Katrina.

*The president wouldn't say if he'd support a possible independent Senate run by Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut if he loses the Democratic primary. Lieberman is facing a tough primary challenge over his support for Bush's Iraq policy. Referring to a kiss he gave Lieberman on the House floor after a State of the Union speech that the Connecticut Democrat's foes have used against him, Bush joked, "You're trying to get me to give him a political kiss, which may be his death."

Sen. Joe Biden Commits Racial Slur, Where's the Outrage?

As NewsBuster Mark Finkelstein pointed out on Friday, there is quite a double-standard in the media concerning what’s acceptable for a Democrat to say versus a Republican. With that in mind, as captured by C-SPAN, Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) recently made some comments concerning folks from India that were not at all flattering. As of yet, there appears to be no media outrage.

Here’s what Biden said:

“In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

One of Swing's first decisive acts was to transfer certain entrenched immigration officials out of the border area to other regions of the country where their political connections with people such as Senator Johnson would have no effect.

Then on June 17, 1954, what was called "Operation Wetback" began. Because political resistance was lower in California and Arizona, the roundup of aliens began there. Some 750 agents swept northward through agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions a day. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. Another 488,000, fearing arrest, had fled the country.

By mid-July, the crackdown extended northward into Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, and eastward to Texas.

By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 illegals had left the Lone Star State voluntarily.

Unlike today, Mexicans caught in the roundup were not simply released at the border, where they could easily reenter the US. To discourage their return, Swing arranged for buses and trains to take many aliens deep within Mexico before being set free.

Tens of thousands more were put aboard two hired ships, the Emancipation and the Mercurio. The ships ferried the aliens from Port Isabel, Texas, to Vera Cruz, Mexico, more than 500 miles south.

The sea voyage was "a rough trip, and they did not like it," says Don Coppock, who worked his way up from Border Patrolman in 1941 to eventually head the Border Patrol from 1960 to 1973.

On Father's Day, Rodderick Anderson (pictured) was pulled over in the 1975 Cadillac he was restoring. When a license-tag check by the Orlando Police Department officer pulled up a vehicle registration for a white Caddy instead of a burgundy one, Anderson was pulled over. He wasn't ticketed for the car's color, but he did receive a citation for not having his 4-year-old son in a car seat. He says that is the only ticket he has been given while being stopped 6 times in 9 months.



They discuss racial profiling at a gathering on community policing.

There is no pattern of racial profiling in Orlando. Juan and Daisy Lynum need a big cup of STHU. They need to quit playing the race card, pay the $11.50 ticket for the headlight, apologize to the Orlando Police Dept. and admit they were wrong! Juan also needs to grow up and let go of Mommy's apron strings.

Some Quotes Are Too Good To Be True

The St. Petersburg Times ran an article about Hazleton, Pennsylvania where the mayor has proposed making English the official language and to fine those who employ illegal aliens. The Hispanic population in Hazleton has grown tenfold since 2000 and now makes up one-third of the town. They write:

It's about time, some longtime Hazleton residents are saying. About time someone did something to stop these people from acting so brazen, walking around like they own the place. Staring you down on the street, making you stop your car to let them cross.

Even some Hispanics who usually support the mayor are nervous, because who can tell just by looking whether a brown-skinned person is here legally or illegally? Your citizenship status doesn't matter to the guy in line at the doughnut place, who says: These people are everywhere. They're like cockroaches.

Notice anything missing? Quotation marks? Names?

One type of journalism is where the reporter talks to people in the town and when they say things the reporter quotes and attributes them to a person or maybe even keeps them anonymous if there is cause. The other type of journalism already knows what people must think and the reporter quotes the voices in his or her head. This goes past various levels of editors who also think it is a good idea. The Times could not deduce that one way to tell if "a brown-skinned person is here illegally" is whether or not they can speak English, a requirement of citizenship.

North Korea Test Fires Six Missiles; Launch of Long-Range Missile Fails Within Seconds

North Korea test-fired a long-range missile and five shorter-range missiles early Wednesday (July 5th), according to CNN, in a move the U.S. called a,
quote, "provocation," but not an immediate threat. However, the long-range Taepodong-2 missile, which is the isolated communist nation's most advanced, failed some 35 seconds after launch. The other missiles all landed in the Sea of Japan between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The launches began at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday local time, which was about 2:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The launch came after weeks of speculation that North Korea was readying to test fire the Taepodong-2, and after warnings from the U.S. and Japan not to do so. The U.S. said it was urgently consulting with other U.N. Security Council members after the launches, which President Bush sees as an act of defiance of the international community by North Korea, Reuters cited a senior administration official as saying. Japan has previously threatened economic sanctions if there was a missile launch.

North Korea shocked the world by testing its first long-range missile in 1998, which flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean. Until these new launches, it had observed a moratorium on long-range missile firings since 1999.

The Declaration of Independence

Ron Blocker's solution for Evans & Jones

Part of Mr. Blocker's 26-point plan for Jones and Evans is to add a seventh period to Jones and Evans for ninth and 10th grades. Those classes of up to 12 students would be intensive reading lessons. Voluntary one-on-one tutoring would be available after school.

Too little, too late. This will create resentment among the students and is destined to fail. What these students need is intensive one on one reading instruction to bring them up to grade level.
